Whitening is a process where the tooth discolouration is ‘whitened’ to a lighter shade. It removes the staining agent through chemical means. It is a safe procedure when carried out under professional supervision. Treatment results usually depend on the severity of the discolouration. Both vital (i.e. live) and non-vital teeth (e.g. tooth with root removed) can be bleached and may take several visits to complete. It is not effective on dental restorations such as amalgam fillings, metal or porcelain crowns, etc.

The dentist will recommend the most ideal method based on your oral condition after an in-office examination to establish the cause and nature of your tooth discolouration, as well as provide you with more information on the various types of whitening procedures available, duration & frequency of treatment.

The tooth whitening process can sometimes take 2 to 3 visits to the dentist. Firstly, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth to make a mouthguard. Your dentist will then talk to you about using this guard at home with a bleaching gel. You then regularly apply the gel at home for a certain amount over a couple of weeks. You may prefer laser whitening, which is done entirely by your dentist. Laser whitening is done by a bleaching product painted onto your teeth activated by a light shining onto them. This process takes about one hour.

Unfortunately, teeth whitening isn’t permanent. Whitening can last anywhere from a couple of months up to three years. The whitening effect won’t last as long if you smoke or drink red wine, tea or coffee, which can all stain your teeth.

Teeth whitening can only be done on natural teeth. The treatment doesn’t work on crowns, dentures, fillings, or veneers.

Teeth whitening is an effective and safe way to remove stains from your teeth and make them appear visibly whiter. If done correctly, it will not damage tooth enamel.

Teeth whitening should not hurt. You should always let your dentist know of any sensitivities or previous whitening products you’ve used beforehand.
