Amalgam Fillings

Dental amalgam is the traditional silver-coloured filling we are all familiar with. Although there is mercury in dental amalgam, once it is combined with the other materials in the amalgam filling its chemical nature is changed rendering it harmless. Research into the safety of dental amalgam has been carried out for over a century and to date, no trustworthy controlled studies have found a connection between amalgam fillings and any medical problem.

Whilst composite (tooth coloured) fillings are becoming more popular, amalgam fillings represent the most durable and long-lasting form of filling available. (Apart from gold fillings which are more expensive.)

Amalgam fillings are the only type of filling provided through the NHS – composite fillings are considered to be ‘cosmetic’ and therefore must be paid for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Amalgam fillings are dental fillings that are made of a mixture of metals, mainly liquid mercury, and powdered alloy. Amalgam fillings are also known as silver fillings.
We use dental amalgam because it is strong, durable, and easily manipulated. The material is straightforward and easy to place in cavities of all sizes.
Dental amalgam has advantages over resin-based fillings for example:
• when a patient is identified as being at higher risk for tooth decay.
• when large fillings are needed in the back teeth.
• They are less expensive than other fillings

Marilyn – Various Treatments

“I felt that treatment’s been really good from start to finish. I’ve been a patient here for probably over about 13 years, 14 years maybe, and every time I need to have a course of treatment, the appointments are really prompt, fit in around your lifestyle and around you when you can make it.

They explain everything, reassure you, make you feel not so worried about coming to the dentist, it can be quite a scary thing, they are really welcoming and put you at your ease.

Before, I used to be really conscious about my teeth and I didn’t like to smile very much, but they’ve been really quite good to me here. Seeing the hygienist has given me a confidence back that my teeth look quite nice.

I would recommend this practice to anybody that was looking for dentists, because, as I say, they’re really well organized, they always try to fit you in if you’ve got a problem. The staff are really friendly and welcoming, and I always feel well looked after.”
